When Steve arrived in Portugal to stay with her brother she was not prepared to be bowled clean off her feet by the first startlingly handsome man who looked at her in disapproval because she was wearing shorts, and he was a Portuguese who like - indeed, insisted on - his women being feminine - like his fiancee, the beautiful Madalena. So it seemed pretty certain that where Dom Manoel de Romeiro was concerned Steve was completely out of the running, although he had once likened her to a rose. For she wanted to be a red rose - while he preferred to wear a white one in his immaculate lapel !!!!!
